ChatGPT banned in Italy over privacy concerns

On Friday, the Italian data-protection authority said there were privacy concerns relating to the model. Italy is the first Western country to block ChatGPT.

What you need to know:

  • The Italian data-protection authority will ban and investigate OpenAI with immediate effect.

  • Millions of people have used ChatGPT since its launch in November 2022, and Microsoft has spent billions of dollars on it.

  • Concerns over the potential risks of AI include its threat to jobs, spreading of misinformation and bias.

  • The Italian watchdog said it would investigate whether ChatGPT complied with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

  • The app had experienced a data breach involving user conversations and payment information, and there was no legal basis to justify the mass collection and storage of personal data for the purpose of ‘training’ the algorithms underlying the operation of the platform.

  • Bard, Google’s rival AI chatbot, is now available but only to specific users over the age of 18.

  • OpenAI has 20 days to say how it will address the watchdog’s concerns, under penalty of a fine of €20 million ($21.7m) or up to 4% of annual revenues.

  • Consumer advocacy group BEUC called on EU and national authorities to investigate ChatGPT and similar chatbots due to concerns about deception and manipulation, as the technology is not sufficiently regulated.

  • ChatGPT is already blocked in several countries, including China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia.

The library has a great search interface and it also has a filtering system that allows you to filter the tool you’re trying to find. For example, if you are looking for a tool to generate code, you can select “Generate”, “Write code”, and “Text” and the application filters to a list of tools that match this criteria.
