Fake AI images spread online of Trump and Putin being jailed

As we enter the age of AI and the upcoming election cycle, I fear that AI’s ability to spread misinformation is exponentially higher than what we faced in previous election cycles in the United States. The tools and technology that has been emerging such as DALL-E and Midjourney have the ability to create realistic images from text prompts (as seen in the below images that have been circulating around Twitter for the past week.

What you need to know:

  • AI image generators like Midjourney and DALL-E create realistic images from text prompts.
  • Midjourney’s latest version can mimic news agency photo styles.
  • Eliot Higgins of Bellingcat created and shared AI-generated images of Trump and Putin arrests.
  • Midjourney locked Higgins out of their server after the Trump images went viral.
  • Public awareness and education is crucial to combat visual misinformation.
  • Higgins suggests social media companies develop technology to detect AI-generated images.
  • Twitter has a policy against synthetic, manipulated, or out-of-context media.
  • Policy experts worry about regulating deepfakes involving ordinary people.
